The Spring Festival usually falls in January or February. It is the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar. Before the festival, my family and I start preparing for it. We clean our house to welcome the new year. My mother says that cleaning the house means sweeping away bad luck and making room for good things. I like helping her sweep the floor and wipe the windows. It feels like we are getting ready for something special.
One of the most exciting parts of the Spring Festival is the New Year’s Eve dinner. All the family members come together to have a big meal. There are many delicious dishes, such as dumplings, fish, and noodles. Dumplings are very important because they look like gold coins and bring us good luck. My grandmother always makes the best dumplings. She taught me how to fold them, and I tried to make some too. Although my dumplings looked a little strange, everyone said they were very tasty.
After dinner, we watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV. It is a special program that has music, dance, and funny performances. I enjoy watching the comedians and the acrobatics. Sometimes I laugh a lot and sometimes I fall asleep. But I still like to be with my family and watch it together.
On the first day of the new year, we wear new clothes and visit our relatives. We say “Happy New Year” to each other and give red envelopes (hongbao) filled with money. My grandfather gives me a red envelope every year, and I feel very happy when I get it. I also go to the park with my parents and see people playing games and dancing. There are also fireworks in the sky, which light up the night and make me excited.
During the Spring Festival, I also learn a lot about my culture. My teacher told us that the Spring Festival is a time to honor our ancestors and wish for a better future. I learned that there are many traditions, such as putting up red couplets, setting off firecrackers, and eating special foods. Even though I am only in third grade, I try to remember these things and share them with my friends.
I love the Spring Festival because it brings my family together. We eat, play, and have fun. It is a time when I can forget about school and just enjoy being with my loved ones. I also like the feeling of excitement and hope that comes with the new year. I always make a wish for the new year, hoping that I can study harder and become a better person.
